Zandar's Thought Of The Day

Can somebody explain to me how Doug Hoffman was the Right's Ned Lamont? Because every idiotic GOP argument as to why The Hoffman Effect is just the natural state of the GOP and the Democrats are the ones in the middle of a civil war has "Remember Ned Lamont?" in there somewhere.

For the life of me, I don't get how the two are anything alike, other than both men lost.

  1. Let me try to take a stab at it. Kos' adamant opposition to Lieberman's support of Operation Iraqi Freedom led him to support Ned Lamont, whom he felt would pressure the Democrats to be even more anti-Iraqi Freedom than they were. Democrats ran on the idea that US forces should be immediately redeployed from Iraq and the "Head Pat Media" claimed the Election of 2006 expressed voters' disapproval of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Doug Hoffman was the answer to the New York State GOP's decision to choose Dede, who could not show why she deserved to run on the GOP ticket. Her positions on the issues ran counter to the core principles of the GOP. In fact, she ran away from John McCormack of The Weekly Standard when he wanted to ask her a few questions. The endorsements of Hoffman by several in the conservative movement was an effort to convince the GOP to nominate candidates who at least can show why they're conservative, not to out-liberal the Democrats. Whenever the GOP runs moderates, they lose, as we learned on this day last year.

I will agree with you that Hoffman isn't like Lamont, as Hoffman was at least able to garner 45% of the vote to Owens' 49%, whereas Lamont couldn't get within 5%, losing to Lieberman 49.7% to 39.7%

  2. Alright. That's at least a decent explanation rather than the pernicious one trying to equate the movement behind Hoffman with the one behind Ned Lamont.
