Last Call

Keith Olbermann has apparently just quit MSNBC.

The liberal host of of MSNBC's Countdown has quit after tonight's broadcast.

“Good night, and good luck,” Keith Olbermann said for the last time on the cable news network.

The phrase is one he borrowed from the late veteran radio and television journalist Edward R. Murrow.

MSNBC released a short statement, saying that the two parties had not apparently reached agreement on Olbermann's contact.

"MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract," the statement said.

It continued, "The last broadcast of 'Countdown with Keith Olbermann' will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC’s success and we wish him well in his future endeavors."

The fact this happened mere days after the FCC approved the Comcast/NBC Universal merger?  One hell of a coincidence there, folks.  One that stinks to high heaven.

Holy crap.  I don't even know what to say.  It's a Last Call, indeed.  Talk about a Friday Night News Dump.

Good night and good luck to you too, Keith.

[UPDATECNN confirms this, here's the clip from Keith himself.

Just...wow.  As IronBrow flags in the comments, Keith says right off the bat in this clip that he was "told this would be his last show".  Doesn't seem like he quit to me.

[UPDATE 2DougJ points out it's the same day former NBC Universal owner GE's CEO becomes President Obama's new economy pointman.

Moving at the speed of business.

[UPDATE 3]  The NY Times:

NBC executives said the move had nothing to do with the impending takeover of NBC Universal by Comcast.

Sure it didn't.  Guy had two years left on his contract too.

  1. He says in the beginning of the clip that he was told, "This is going to be that last edition of your show." So he was fired?

  2. I'm not sure if it was fired, let go, the NBC press release mentions that KO and MSNBC couldn't agree on a new contract...I don't know what the hell happened.

    HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

KO was FIRED! Looks like their new bosses weren't going to put up with his bullshit for even a second! Good for them!

And since nobody else watches the rest of LSDNBC's lineup it'll be even easier to get rid of the rest of that clown car full of morons.

Can you follow Olbermouth's lead and quit your blog tonight? Please tell me this was your "Last Call" too...

  4. Oh good, you again.

You know, for all your screaming of free speech, you should be angry that Olbermann's voice has been silenced.

Same Olbermann as he's been for years now. The difference is the new boss pulled his plug.

There is no free speech, only corporate America.

It's much more fun to rub it in your lying, sock-puppeting, hypocrite face.

Did you know that Zandar is a fraud?

He created a commenter named Arcadian as a sock puppet and used the account for months until he got busted.

When real conservative commenters destroy his terrible arguments he panics and he locks his threads so he gets the last word in.

When conservative blogs call him out and PROVE he's nothing more than an ignorant fool, a gullible hack and a race-bating idiot he runs for the hills.

Zandar is a proven liar, fraud, and fool. He will lie to you and try to fool you again because he thinks you're the "Stupid" he's fighting against.

Why are you wasting time on this blog? Don't feed his ego. If you leave, he'll shut this travesty of a blog down. Help this poor, deluded man.

Before he lies to you again. He's pathological.

    Oh No!

If Olbermann is such a crucial, needed professional pundit voice, some other network will pick him up and give him a show, right?

    Right?

Moron. Cry yourself to sleep, boy. Soon there will be zero liberals on TV...just as it should be. This is a majority conservative country, asshole.

And we just claimed another liberal head. What are YOU going to do about it?

    A whole shitload of nothing.

Keep bitching on your blog. Your readers wouldn't fill a high school classroom.

You have no voice. This is our country now.

And you can shut the fuck up.

  7. This news really saddens me. I do not, of course, know why Keith was let go, but the timing is quite a coincidence.

I will certainly miss the show. It was well presented, entertaining, and thought-provoking. I didn't always agree, but I always felt informed and entertained. A very disappointing end to this evening.

    What's the matter Zandar?

Has it finally hit you how futile it is being a liberal in conservative America in 2011?

Thinking about giving it all up?

    Why fight it?

Take my advice, shut down the blog, it's better for you in the long run.

Do the honorable thing like Keith, just up and quit. The rest of us have an America to restore.

  9. Remember though - conservatives are the decent ones, the ones who truly care about our nation and the freedoms granted by the Constitution - especially the parts where some people only count as 3/5ths and women can't vote.

So, remember, when they say we have no voice and its their nation, they mean it in the nicest possible way - with their penis in their hand. Stay classy problem, and die in a fire.

  10. You know, I started watching Olbermann some time ago, due to one of his special comments... the one in which I remember him telling Bush to shut the hell up, in reference to the fact that Bush claimed he gave up golf to be in solidarity with the families of those lost in Iraq. Which, of course, was then pointed out that Bush lied about THAT.

I watched him on and off, and I didn't always agree with him, but... Kitty will be sad that he's gone. Hopefully he can get another show: he might not be right all the time (come now, who is?) but he is the kind of firebrand the left needs.

Hopefully this doesn't mean that Maddow will get the axe herself.

  11. One thought though: he's done blogging at DailyKOS before. I do not think someone like him would stay away from politics too long, hehe.

  12. Can we put an end to the 'liberal media' myth now?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not really, it keeps the "conservatives are the real oppressed victims who the evil liberal monolith is trying to silence" narriative going.

  14. Dammit, Zandar, stop hogging all the really thick trolls! Selfish...

  15. You had The Donalde visit Thers. He's the Sasquatch's Greatest Friend. And he was a professor of something! And he had a blog too. A crappy and stupid blog, but a blog ne'ertheless. Don't sell yourself short!

  16. If you want him that bad, you can have him. I'd pay you to take him, but to be honest, I don't have the money to pay for the safe relocation of jackasses.

  17. Zandar, have you ever thought about installing a Cleek-style pie filter?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Huh. I need a something filter alright.

  19. I have little sympathy for any multi-millionaire media figure losing his job in this economy, but he was one of the few even remotely visible liberal media voices out there, even when I turned him off as often as not for one of his self-serving rants.

Still, if Olbermann's behaviour is the new standard for being sacked in the world of cable news, several score need to follow.

  20. I have never seen so many ridiculous RW trolls so pathetically threatened by a blog.

Keep it up, Zandar, you must be doing something right!
